Footprint On Lovely Cambodia

世界的に人気のある旅行ガイドブック「Lonely Planet (ロンリープラネット)」が、翌年のおすすめ旅行先ランキングを毎年発表しています。しかし、2020年に世界中に広がった新型コロナウイルスの影響により、人々の旅に対する概念が大きく変わったため、ランキングの基準について新たに見直さなければならなかったようです。結果、2021年の旅行先ランキングは、「持続性」、「コミュニティー」、「多様性」の３つ新しいカテゴリーで発表されています。

そして今回、「コミュニティー」カテゴリーランキングにおいて、カンボジアにある「Footprint Cafes」が「ベスト中小企業」として選出されました。「Footprint Cafes」は、2016年にイギリス出身のGeorgina Hemmingway氏がシェムリアップにオープンしました。「Footprint Cafes」は、カフェという役割だけではなく、観光客がカフェの利用を通じて、コミュニティー（社会）貢献が出来る場という役割を担っています。

カンボジアの経済的な社会問題を解決するために、カフェではカンボジア人を雇用し、職業訓練を実施したり、就労支援を行っています。また、カンボジア人起業家をサポートするため、カフェ内にコワーキングスペースを設置し、スペースを無償、または補助金で貸出したり、ビジネス関連の講義や商品発売イベントなども実施しています。さらに、カフェの経営から出たすべての利益を、奨学金や起業助成金として提供し、カンボジアの経済的弱者を支援しています。「Footprint Cafes」はこれらすべての活動が評価され、今回はLonely Planetに選ばれました。

2021年も引き続きコロナ感染拡大の影響で、未だに先行きは不透明ですが、今年こそはカンボジアをはじめとする外国を訪問し、「Footprint Cafes」のような素敵なカフェに足跡 (footprint) が残せるようになるといいですね。

Each year, the world-renowned tourist guidebook, “Lonely Planet”, will rank and announce a list of best countries/places to visit for the year ahead. However, due to the effect of the global Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 last year, people’s mindset towards international travel has changed greatly, and a need for the reinvention of travel destination criteria is inevitable. As such, for this year 2021, instead of the usual top 10 best countries ranking, ”Lonely Planet” has break it down into three new categories, in terms of “Sustainability”, “Community”, and “Diversity”.

It is worth mentioning that this time, a cafe named, “Footprint Cafes” in Cambodia has been selected as “Best Small Business” under the Community category. “Footprint Cafes” was first established in Siem Reap in 2016 by British expatriate, Georgina Hemmingway. “Footprint Cafes” is not just any other ordinary cafe; it believes greatly in contributing to the community (society) by involving tourists who patronize the cafe.

In a bid to tackle the poverty situation in Cambodia, local Cambodian staff are employed to manage the cafe, and they are provided with various job training and employment assistance. Besides that, to support more Cambodian entrepreneurs in the community, a co-working space has been set-up inside the cafe, where business-related talks or product launch events can take place, and the space is provided for free, or with rate subsidies. The cafe also contributes 100% of their net profits and offer it as educational or employment grants to aid those in need. It is without doubt in recognition of all these contribution made towards the community, that “Footprint Cafes” was selected by Lonely Planet this time.

As we entered into the new year 2021, with the Covid-19 pandemic situation still remain bleaks, we wonder when will we ever have the chance to travel again, and to visit and leave our “footprints” on lovely cafes like “Footprint Cafes”.
